HISU 393 History of Mass Communication (3)
This course looks at the history of mass communication and how such media as books, newspapers, magazines, movies, radio and television have affected not only culture, but perhaps even the very structure of human thought. It also examines the historical development of the different types of content that have made their way through the media of mass communication, such as news, entertainment, advertising, public relations and propaganda. The current media environment is the all-but-unnoticed backdrop to our lives, almost like the air we breathe. In this course we will be trying to understand how it came to be and what we have learned from our experience of it. Selected readings will be posted online towards the end of the summer.

HISL 347 Colonial Louisiana, 1700-1812 (3)
A survey of the history of the Province of Louisiana and the Louisiana Territory under French, Spanish, and United States rule, from its discovery and settlement through establishment of the State of Louisiana in 1812. Combining lecture and seminar format, the course explores social, economic, political, and cultural developments and institutions which have contributed to the heritage and characteristics of the region. Louisiana offers a unique opportunity for the study of comparative colonial patterns, 1700-1812. Same as HISU 347.

CSHS 393 History of Sexuality in the Media (3)
This course will examine the way sexuality has been presented by both the mainstream entertainment industry, and the "adult" entertainment
industry, beginning in the early 20th century, and continuing through the present. The central question will be whether, and in what ways,
our views about sexuality have been altered by the increasingly widespread availability of sexually charged imagery in both mainstream and adult media.
Another and more focused question will be whether, and in what ways, the social and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and '70s affected the presentation of sexual imagery.
