CLAS 104 Mythology (3) A study of the origins of Greek mythology and the importance of myth for Greek and Roman culture.
CLAS 381 Homer and His Legacy (3) We will focus on Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, condidering not only their literary merits, but also questions of authorship and composition, their value as historical documents, and their enormous influence on later Classical literature and culture. To this end, we will also read the Homeric Hymns, selections from greek lyric poets, and Vergil's Aeneid. In order to see the relevance of the Iliad for our time, we will read and discuss Jonathan Shay's Achilles in Vietnam.
